Understanding Normalisation norms for selection of candidates:
- Raw scores obtained by the candidates
- Paper – 1(common) = 66/100 – [33 out of 50 Questions answered correct]
- Paper-2 (Education subject )= 108/200 – 54 out of 100 questions answered correct]
- Normalization procedure is based on percentile scores of candidates,
- Raw scores of a particular subject group from highest to lowest marks are aligned to obtain mean marks distribution.
- the test data helps us to determine a student’s rank
- Raw Marks for all the shifts/sessions will be merged in the percentile scale of measurement.
- The percentile rank of a student is based on the relative score in comparison from highest to lowest.
- In case of 99 percentile scores, total raw score of a candidate is equal to or less than the candidate with maximum score.
- lower scores corresponds to lower percentile level.
- In case of 99 percentile scores, total raw score of a candidate is equal to or less than the candidate with maximum score.
- Thus the selection is made based on the conversion of raw scores into percentiles.
- Raw scores of a particular subject group from highest to lowest marks are aligned to obtain mean marks distribution.
- Statistically significant levels of selection for assistant professor @ 95 percentile and JRF nomination @ 99 percentile from an entire population of all subjects is decided in advance,
- The average mean of the will be the eligibility cut-off for that category of students.
- For instance, both paper 1 & 2, 140+80 = 174/300
- % score = 174/300 * 100 = 58 % obtained score is above the mean of true scores 58 and 67.33.
- The above cutoff is an instance that it crossed both levels as mentioned in the table below.
- So, it qualified for both levels AP and JRF of this NTA test.
- % score = 174/300 * 100 = 58 % obtained score is above the mean of true scores 58 and 67.33.
Subject/Year | Total Students Appeared/ Registered | Cutoff percentage(General)
Education/Nov-2020 | 30,641/48,406 | –
Assistant Professor | 937 | 58
JRF – Cutoff | 87 | 67.33 |
5. General category marks are set as standard for other categories to determine eligibility cut-offs.

Percentile is different from %
Where 100 percentile score means number of candidates who scored less than or equal to 100 % marks.
Normally distributed scores corresponds to percentile ranks to indicate his/her students performance in the test.
Decision of selection(Pre-test) @95 percentile and 99 percentile is made.
Whereas cutoff (post test) is determined by mean scores of those candidates selected at the above two levels.
